Cyclocross was originally developed in Europe for cyclists to maintain fitness during the winter months. The cyclocross rider is subjected to a very short course with varying terrain, such as, grass fields, hard pack dirt, seasonal mud crossings, and possibly snow. The rider is also forced to dismount and run over barriers and run up steep hills. The race is typically 45 to 60 minutes.
The cyclocross bike looks very similar to a standard road bike. But, if you look very closely, you'll notice that the cyclocross bike is designed for off-road use. It has knobby tires for off-road terrain, lower gearing for steep hills, cantilever brakes and a wider rear triangle for mud clearance, wider handlebars for better bike handling, and mountain bike pedals.
